Born in 1975 in Bamako, Amadou Sow is currently a journalist at L’Essor, a national news daily, and also administers its website (www.essor.ml). After working as a technical assistant for the Maison Africaine de la Photographie [African House of Photoraphy] (MAP) in Bamako between 2007 and 2011, he was appointed to the Mali Ministry for Communication, working for the Agence Malienne de Presse et de Publicité [Mali Press and Publicity Agency].
A Masters graduate in communication and journalism, Amadou Sow discovered contemporary photography after studying at the Institut National des Arts [National Institute for the Arts], Bamako. He has exhibited work in France, the USA, Switzerland, South Africa and in several other countries in Africa. He is a member of the Alliance des Journalistes Culturels du Mali [Mali Association of Cultural Journalists].
A co-ordinator of the Rencontres africaines de la photographie [African Photography Encounters] in Bamako in 2005, he was co-curator of the exhibition Aller et Venir [Coming and Going]/Toso any ka taka: Photography and the Representation of African Migration at the Musée de Bamako 2011 and co-organiser of the Visual Griots project in 2006. Amadou Sow is active in propagating a kind of participatory photography, helping young people become more sensitive to their environment and sharpen their critical attitudes.
